Cross-cutting Group 1: Integrated Vision for a Just Climate Transition

Maria Beatrice Andreucci (LNI, La Sapienza), Marco Delli Paolo (La Sapienza), Elke Mertens (LNI, HS Neubrandenburg), Francisco Carvalho (Landscape Laboratory)

Local Challenge: In what ways can we establish a comprehensive landscape strategy for Guimarães that effectively supports alignment between local initiatives and overarching objectives related to climate transition, nature-positive environments, and community resilience?

Spatial scope & partners: Accompany any group of choice

Guiding questions:

  1. How can Guimarães develop a holistic approach addressing multiple environmental and social aspects, including air quality, water management, waste reduction, and biodiversity, aiming for “One Planet” city status?
  2. How can the Landscape Laboratory for real-time data (biodiversity, green cover) be used to guide policy, ensuring measurable results for climate adaptation and mitigation?
  3. How can the “quintuple helix” model (government, business, academia, citizens, environment), support the local governance in involving stakeholders through co-designing plans like the Climate Neutrality Action Plan?
  4. Which economic opportunities can be identified aiming at innovation and green jobs, supporting a fair transition for workers?

Expected outcomes for forum publication:

  • Take note of the opportunities and challenges that other groups highlight during their field visits, and record your observations.
  • Evaluate the ways in which interventions across various landscapes—including rivers, foodscapes, urban environments, and recreational areas—can be strategically integrated to mainstream a just climate transition.
  • Create ideas for versatile, environmentally beneficial initiatives that incorporate feedback and perspectives from all participating groups.
  • Suggest approaches that can be expanded and replicated to create landscapes that respond effectively to complex climate challenges.
