Since the emergence of the Council of Europe Landscape Convention in 2000, landscape is considered as ‘an area, as perceived by people’. The convention further asks for an inclusive understanding of landscapes. Urban, peri-urban and rural landscapes belong to this concept as well as outstanding, degraded and everyday landscapes. Most importantly, the Convention understands landscape as an integrative political goal. In combination with contemporary approaches to sustainability and transformative science, landscape approaches can be very powerful as they make sustainability conflicts spatially explicit, tangible and traceable. This has recently been articulated by the UNISCAPE manifesto on the Future of the European Landscape.

The European Landscape Convention is an essential but underutilised international instrument. During our transdisciplinary conversation we invite representatives from different sectors and disciplines to reflect on the question: How might we promote landscape as an integrative sustainability concept?

Participants on our panel are, amongst others:

  • Prof. Dr. Dr. Olaf Kühne, Eberhard Karls Universität, Tübingen
  • Christof Luz, Landscape Architect, Stuttgart
  • Ruth Schagemann, President, Architects Council of Europe
  • Dr. Sophie Hüglin, European Association of Archaeologists’ Commissioner to the Conference of INGOs & CINGO’s delegate to the CoE Landscape Convention
  • Margarida Cancela d’Abreu, IFLA-Europe Vice President for Education
  • Dr. Gerhard Ermischer, President of the Conference of INGOs, Council of Europe (CoE)
