Objectives

Settlement development in Stuttgart Region is very much determined and restricted by the regional plan. Consequently, 75% of the regional territory are protected open spaces. These spaces are the backbone of the Stuttgart Region Landscape Park, which is by itself an informal planning instrument. The objective of the group is to explore how this regional idea translates to the communal landscape level of Nürtingen. This includes a deep reflection on how the transition of scales, governance, landscape systems, planning approaches and communication schemes can be operationalized. The case explored locally shall spark discussions on how to overcome theory-practice gaps and identify possible knowledge needs. A further objective is to compare the local situation to international cases and to share learnings from good practices.

Scope

Nürtingen is part of Neckar Landscape Park which is an element of Stuttgart Region Landscape Park. Our observations will focus on the catchment area of Tiefenbach, a tributary to the river Neckar. This catchment area covers an interesting transect ranging from the natural context of the Swabian Alb to a highly modified waterscape within the urban area of Nürtingen.

Partners

This working group will partially overlay with the WAVE ERASMUS partnership (Water Areas Visions for Europe). Locally, the group will meet stakeholders and citizens of the Tiefenbach valley. Over the summer term, master students of the IMLA programme will focus with their design studio on the Tiefenbach valley. From June 21-29, the WAVE team will also organize an intensive study programme on this topic. These educational process will be fully integrated and support the knowledge creation of this working group.

Key questions

  • How might we translate Neckar Landscape Park to the local scale?
  • What might be the future role of this river in an integrated landscape development scenario? (We might draw up different scenarios)
  • Which good practices exist and what could we learn from them?
  • Which research questions does the case evoke?
  • Which recommendations could we conclude for education?

Expected outcomes

  • A variety of integrated development scenarios showing a spectrum of possible futures
  • Conceptual approaches on how to translate the Neckar Landscape Park to the Tiefenbach valley
  • A small selection of good practice case studies
  • Suggestions for innovative educational approaches
  • Suggestions for possible research topics / research questions
